Meet the Comets

John Whiting
John A veteran of many British Finals, both team and individual, John returned to Bury in 2000, after spells at Stockport and Dudley. A reliable and passionate rider, noted for his fast gating and uncompromising blocking manoeuvres.
Matt Parr
Matt A fast sprinting rider noted for his fitness. Has curtailed his riding activities in recent years as a result of studying for his degree at Liverpool University. Has made yet another return of late, riding both first and second team fixtures.
Ben Scranage
Ben The undoubted star of the Summer Fun recruitment campaign of 1998, Ben has gone on to finish on the podium for Bury in a number of British Championship events. In the last two years, has established himself as one of the first names on the Bury teamsheet.
Robert Pearce
Rob One of the country's top Under 19 riders, Robert has won numerous local and regional individual competitions, and has again shown strongly in the 2002. Rob featured as one half of Bury's top first team pairing, the other half being Fred Rothwell, until his (very) recent retirement from the sport. Will be sorely missed.
Fred Rothwell
Fred An experienced and polished veteran performer, and a great team rider. Fred is the club coach, famed for his speedy gating and uncompromising team riding. Has helped to develop the skills of all of the young riders, as well as undergoing a renaissance in his own riding career.
Paul Dyson
Paul Bury's number one rider for many years. Famed for his very, very uncompromising shoulders and quick gating. 2001 was Paul's first year in the veteran category, and he remains one of the favourites in the over forties events, as well as continuing to be a significant force in open competitions.
Scott Jarman
Scott Hard riding, top team man. Reliable, yet lively riding style and personality, Scott is well known for his start-line banter! The third of Bury's top-drawer Under 19 side.
Tom Doyle
Tom Cousin of Scott Jarman, Tom is a cool and sophisticated performer, noted for his fitness and passing abilities. The fourth of Bury's Under 19 stars. Becoming an Ireland international in 2003, has been a real highlight for Tom as he continues to make progress. Surely he will soon become a regular first teamer.
John Olijnyk
John O Bury's first Internet recruit, John started racing in early 2001, after seeing this website (so get on yer bikes people!). Another developing young rider particularly noted for his smart bike preparation and video editing skills.
Dave Morgan
Dave M Returned to racing in 2001, after a year off. Has become a firmly established member of the first team, with his strong gating and excellent fitness. Another of Bury's top veteran riders.
Steve Muff
Muffy Comeback man. Steve has returned to racing with more enthusiasm than ever in the last three seasons. Despite a series of injuries and setbacks, he continues to be a well established member of the Bury first team. Noted for his keenness to ride against Heckmondwike!
Dave O'Callaghan
Cally A rider reborn in 2000-01. Cally is still enjoying a renaissance in terms of both fitness and style. A stalwart of the Bury second team, he has not been as prolific in 2003. Come back Cally, your club needs you!
Steve Mann
Steve Another of Bury's veteran riders, Steve is noted for his fitness and immaculate bike preparation. The rider who has ridden the most matches for the Comets.
Gary Hollingsworth
Gary A very experienced campaigner, with more bikes than Halfords. Well known for his quick gating and a keenness for end of season racing. Always has immaculately presented bikes.
Mark Rushby
Mark Returned to racing in late 2002, becoming club sponsor in 2003, the former schoolboy British Champion and Cyclo-cross international has been Bury's number one in 2003. A confident and uncompromising rider, with the a high-tech bike to match his skills (see the Pedalsport website for details!)
Simon Rothwell
Simon Son of Fred, Simon returned to racing in 2002/3 after a long lay off. Clearly his skills were undiminished, and he has quickly established himself as a top second team performer. Now just needs some fitness!
Mark Hollingsworth
Mark H Son of Gary, Mark is one of the youngest of the New Comets. An all round sports fanatic, he is a particularly skilful footballer. Races one of the many bikes from the Hollingsworth stable.
Neil Howarth
Capitano Club captain for many years, famed for having the cleanest bike/s in Cycle Speedway! A product of the never-ending Bury recruitment campaign (why not try it yourself!), he is now established as one of Bury's top first team riders.
Sharet Dyson
Sharet Daughter of the uncompromising Mr P Dyson, Sharet has turned a wheel on more than one occasion in 2002. An effective and elegant style has been developed early in her career.
Chris Dyson
Chris Son of Paul. Has a look of the master when riding the track, and can certainly take a knock! Has fallen trackwards on more than one occasion in 2002. Will have to build up his shoulders to compete with dad!
Steve Jarman
Steve J Dad of Scott, and uncle of Tom. Steve is another of the Bury veteran riders. Very reliable, Steve is also part of the team management set up. Noted for his enormous bike!
